Details
IN BRIEF
A refugee of Garlemald's march into Dalmasca, Bozja and other Far Eastern territories, Squall Leonhart has seen more fighting than most his age -- joining the Barracudas at the age of twelve. After recovering from an injury on the Carteneau Flats, he spent five years doing rebuilding and peace keeping missions as a Yellowjacket, reaching the rank of Sergeant before taking a leave of absence.Although he briefly returned to the Lominsan military to serve as Second Lieutenant in the Maelstrom during Operation Archon, under Captain R'ashat Rhiki, Squall quit permanently shortly after the advent of the Seventh Astral Era and has been naught more than an adventurer ever since.Presently, he's conducting personal research into rare flowers, while offering his sword arm to any who may need it.
Personality
In unfamiliar company, Squall speaks little-- he keeps conversations topical and to the point as much as possible. His reticence is spawned not from apathy toward others but the opposite - he loves deeply, and has found that even cursory connections can be agonising if lost. It has taken years for Squall's heart to grow to somewhat accept the nature of being alive -- that loss is inevitable, that suffering is ingrained, that death lies at the end of the road. In saying that, Squall will fight all of these with every ilm of his being, determined to save as many as he can, to live for one more bell.
"Even if you don't have a dream right now, you can come up with one later. Life is just too precious to throw away, okay?"Squall's passion and headstrong nature have given him the endurance for the trials he's faced, and left him a man with a deep understanding of the ways of the world. His worldly experience has lent itself to his natural intelligence-- Squall is incredibly observant, and easily identifies details others may miss. He's not afraid to experiment, and detests being left idle. Squall is always moving forward, pushing toward his goals with tenacity and zeal.He is far from perfect - his observant nature means he may point out things he shouldn't, and his lack of tact can make others uncomfortable. He is also prone to missing social cues, even if its someone he cares for, occasionally leading to hurt feelings and misunderstandings. Squall also possesses a temper, and drive can make him difficult when rest or retreat is necessary. He has difficulty identifying when he's overworked and is more likely to have a meltdown or collapse than actually get the rest he needs. Desperation can also make Squall very dangerous -- he will go to the ends of the earth for those he cares for, and even he is unsure just how far he could go. To top it off, Squall also has the ability to disengage from his empathic nature, which has served him well in the battlefield, but can make him an incredibly formidable opponent. He is good at what he does, and enjoys combat a great deal -- those who have survived head-on combat with him are far from eager to repeat the experience.
OCCUPATION
Squall's tendency to be the sort who 'tries anything once' has led him into many different fields over the course of his life. At this stage, the best descriptor for what he does would be 'Wandering Vanguard', although it far from encapsulates his exact profession. A former military officer, serving across all of the Lominsan military, Squall resigned shortly after the start of the Seventh Astral Era, and has been doing 'odd' jobs ever since, primarily through the Adventurer's Guild. There's always need for those with combat prowess in a place such as Eorzea, teeming with dangerous wildlife and even more dangerous people, though this doesn't mean Squall hasn't had times where he's low on gil and struggled to cover a meal and a room, especially when he was younger.
As much as Squall would like to call himself a mercenary, and by all means most probably would describe his profession as such, Squall has difficulty actually turning away from those in need, even if they can't pay. He's certainly not the level of altruist as, say, a certain respected hero of Eorzea (and will ruthlessly charge people who waste his time and resources with tedious tasks), but its enough at this point that if he were to call himself a mercenary he'd be considered an incredibly bad one. There's a level of moral ambiguity that mercenary work requires that Squall struggles to muster most of the time. At the end of the day the most honest term for him will remain adventurer. On a certain subject, namely the Scions...[Please note that this section is deliberately left ambiguous and will not be actively discussed in RP encounters unless requested or he is pressed on the subject.]
Squall's long years in the Yellowjackets post-Calamity meant he was a familiar face in La Noscea, and one respected by locals. His passion and tireless work ethic for the restoration drew the attention of the Scions, and he was offered membership during their recruitment drive before the summoning of Titan. Squall declined, citing a desire to remain with the Lominsan military, although this was not entirely true...
Squall's path since has brushed with the Scions on a handful of occasions.
However, Squall did not have formal membership, until very recently - something seemed to have changed after the Scions awoke from their comas, and among those changes was Squall genuinely joining their ranks.
He is alike in position to members like Hoary Boulder, Riol, and Arenvald, and his participation is still on a case by case basis.
SKILLSET
Combat
Squall is an adept learner, dexterous with a large aetherpool, able to wield weapons and magics with more or less equal ability. His failing, therein, is often the lack of formal instruction, and his tendency to take the path of most resistance. This leads to unique approaches that can veer either into an advantage or disadvantage.Although Squall is someone who approaches combat with a strategy, if the plan goes out the window or things are different to the original assessment, Squall's tactics become 'reckless'. The reality is that he is someone who sees combat as a point a to point b scenario. He doesn't fluff around, mock or gloat. He's there to get the job done, and it makes him highly efficient, if prone to self-injury. That said, Squall does take pride in being able to do what he does well-- the straightforward approach never changes, but you'll occasionally see enjoyment in his expression during the heat of battle. The course of his adventuring and mercenary work has had him come into the possession of several soulstones.• The Dark Knight soulstone found Squall, rather than the other way around, after he suffered losses he still has trouble talking about. Self-taught, though some parts seemed instinctual...
As much as he would like to reassure others he's stable, the dark rage in his eyes oft speaks otherwise. This class has a story-based reason for being as it is.
Stone origin: found somewhere in Coerthas. Dark Knight is inextricably linked to Squall’s underlying plot. You can read how Squall found his soul stone here.Meeting Radovan at Mor Dhona was a moment of luck for Squall. Despite all that has occurred, a gunblade he had brought with him from his homeland-- the only item he still has from there-- would finally be put to use. Gunbreaker is refreshing given the sheer toll Dark Knight takes on the soul.
Stone origin: Radovan. Squall was already in possession of a gunblade.Squall won an Astrologian soulstone in a game of Triple Triad, and as a result, that was how he learned to use the cards. His bizarre technique would only be refined when Ishgard began holding symposiums on Sharlayan astrology.
Stone origin: shady dealings, it’s illegal to gamble for more than the allowed MGP currency. Although unknown to Squall, it originally belonged to a Sharlayan astrologian killed before the exodus, and has been passed around, unused, from various black market hands.Early into his military and combat career, Squall attempted to use the gunblade in his possession and it went atrociously, with Squall's lack of knowledge resulting in a style that went nowhere and left him open to assault. However, over the course of many years and his travels, along with the tidbits he has picked up, he has decided to attempt it again -- forming his personal DPS class, Saber. It is a marriage of Gunbreaker, Gladiator and Samurai styles, taking advantage of Squall's strengths in both martial prowess and his aetherpool. In addition, Squall is a former Yellowjacket, Lominsan waif, and passed through the Gladiator's Guild whilst searching for a missing friend. As such, Squall could handle the weapons associated, though he rarely does.
Non-Combat
Years spent on his own meant Squall had to be resourceful – as such he’s decent at budgeting and can grow and cook his own food. His primary talent when it comes to gardening, however, is flowers – he is strongly drawn to lilies in particular, including Nymeia Lilies, and regardless of his living situation he will have a flower pot with a set of lilies within.Cooking wise, he specializes in gamey meats, and finds he prefers the flavour anyway. Rich, warm food is his go-to, though Squall also has bizarre palette, happily eating what most Eorzeans would turn their nose up at, such as Krakka Root and Gysahl Greens. He's also adept at drinks, mostly for his own sake -- a big coffee drinker by day and turning to the bottle by night.Lastly, Squall has a knack for gambling, Triple Triad especially. He plays like a man possessed, foregoing his usual reticent or aloof demeanor the moment the game is mentioned to bail up the poor sod for a round. He has a large collection of cards, and to some individuals would be solely known as ‘that weird guy who only wanted a Triple Triad game?’
Quirks
• Squall is strangely non-averse to heights, finding no fear in being high up or jumping from said heights. Though being a Miqo’te lends him some resilience to this, it’s not actually enough to justify how little qualms he has.• Squall is afraid of ships, especially cargo/fishing vessels that have significant amounts of rigging, rope, and objects. When his ship wrecked when he was five, he was tangled in netting and just barely survived. In saying that, Squall does enjoy swimming.• Squall’s clan is unique, and though he no longer has attachment to them they left their mark on him. Squall will not freely speak about them and will, if asked, say he does not remember.• Squall is an echo-bearer, but he will decline elaborating unless pushed. He considers it somewhat of a curse, rather than a gift, though has been encouraged by others several times to reframe his thinking.• Squall will state his piety is to Azeyma, the Warden. The fact that he has chosen She who is in opposition to the traditional Keeper patron, Menphina, is no coincidence. Although Squall maintains his reticence, the fire and ice, sun and moon of both are a good reflection of himself as a person.
Genetics
As an orphan of non-Eorzean origin, Squall has never had a good grasp on where (or who) he came from, aside from the fact his mother was a Keeper miqo'te, and his father was a Midlander Hyur. With only that to go on, he has chalked up everything that makes him 'other' to be from his Hyuran blood, a side which he has come to detest. This is, however, not entirely true.
Keeper Miqo'te, being primarily matriarchal, do tend to be more genetically diverse than their Seeker cousins (being patriarchal, and therefore having many off-spring attributed to a single father). This rings true in Squall's case, as well -- not only was is own father not Miqo'te, his mother's father was not, either -- instead being a Hrothgar, a Bozjan gunbreaker by the name of Burya.Burya, rather than his father, is the source for Squall's much of Squall's oddness. The most obvious of this is Squall's height - standing at 177cm, he exceeds the general height range for most Miqo'te, and leans more toward a stockier build than the lithe, wiry builds most Miqo'te possess. He lacks clan markings, and his teeth very long and sharp, even considering his Keeper nature.
Beyond that, he possesses unusual markings on the rest of his body-- his shoulders and calves are most prominent, but he also has a pattern down the back of his tail. Things that, in isolation, can be taken as generally oddity, but in tandem clearly indicate to any familiar that Squall's blood lies with the Hrothgar.
Of course, any familiar likely recognise the weapon he wields first, and his appearance later...
FAQ
Q: So he's Squall from Final Fantasy VIII?A: The simplest answer to that question is no. My best framework for an explanation would be existing XIV characters like Krile, Vivi or Fran, who are fully integrated into XIV's world. I use these characters as a basis for Squall's story and implementation.Q: Why is his name misspelt?A: I got a lot more of this question when it was Sqaull (which was a personal reference) but in general: all Final Fantasy lead names are banned for both first and surnames (to my chagrin when I attempted Wind-Up Squall and Cool Squall....for reasons). You'd think this would discourage me, but...nah.Q: Why no clan markings?A: ICly, please read the 'Genetics' section of his detailed information section. OOCly, when I created him and read the profiles for Miqo'te I interpreted the markings as being war paint, as most do, and Squall, being clanless, would not have them. When I was later told a hard to find, extremely obscure piece of information clarified they're genetic, I decided to instead veer into him genetically not having them as it further deepens the sense of otherness and lack of belonging that is integral to this particular AU. All in all, I prefer how he looks without them, and it is somewhat a personal preference. I understand there's pushback from the community in terms of removing markings, but I'm getting really tired of that kind of mindset...and won't be forced to change my mind. It's not like I'm doing something lore purists approve of in the first place.Q: Why Squall, and not an OC?A: This is a little bit of a lengthy answer so I'll preface: this is what I enjoy. This makes me happy. If it's not your cup of tea, let us just nod at one another and move on.
However, the lengthy answer: When I play anything that requires creating my own character, I tend to lean toward mainstream characters I like. Coming into a game like this, I like to take a pre-established character and ask— how would they react to this world? How could their story, themes, and plot be made to blend seamlessly?
That's fun for me, and promotes me having a really good grasp of the lore (which I also enjoy.) So I choose to play other characters, like Squall, and give him a true place in XIV’s world— a place which has developed over the years I’ve played. In essence he’s an OC who shares Squall’s name, but I take pride in the nuances and allusions, the changes and the similarities. Not to say I haven’t attempted to play my OCs, but it’s never felt comfortable. I couldn’t tell you where my OC was during Cartenau or where they’re from, but I could tell you such about Squall, and I take great joy in doing so when the topic does arise!
I’m no less committed to the story and lore because I chose to approach it as ‘integrate from a previous source’ rather than create an OC or a self insert for the sole purpose of XIV’s story. There’s nothing wrong with that...it’s just not how I do things.Q: Does he have the Echo?A: Yes.Q: The Echo is overpowered, though?A: I'm aware it's sort of an RP taboo when it comes to the XIV universe, as it's literally a deus ex machina applicable to 90% of situations. My caveat to this is that Squall's Echo only functions to prevent him from tempering, and at the cost of losing random memories whenever a tempering is attempted. There's very little benefit for him aside from this. In the event you are familiar with Squall's source material, what Squall does see, on the rare occasions his Echo triggers, is reminscent of the hallucinations Squall witnessed during the final cutscenes. Broken, distorted, projections of reality warped by time, memory and emotion.Q: Miqo'te Squall?A: While there's now an in-universe explanation for this, I picked Miqo'te as it suited Squall best. VIII has no non-human party members, and for this reason I figured they would likely be more varied than just Hyurs.
For reference, my headcanons are: Miqo'te Squall, Hyur Rinoa and Zell, Elezen Quistis and Irvine, Lalafel Selphie, and half Hyur/half Elezen Seifer.Q: Dark Knight?A: Given the job's emphasis on grief, I feel this doesn't really require much explanation. In general, Squall and Seifer as characters are framed as a 'dark' and a 'holy' knight respectively, though VIII does not have assigned classes. Diabolos is also Squall's highest compatible Guardian Force. These were the initial reasons, and the Eden raid has only solidified my belief in Dark Knight being a class he has trained in.Q: If he's integrated, has his personality changed at all (like Krile's), or is he the same as he was in VIII?A: He's been shaped by his experiences. He's not the same now as he was during A Realm Reborn, let alone as he was in VIII. In general, he's a little more personable.Q: Does he have any sort of relationship to the Eden raids?*A: Yes. I've included a brief summary of his Eden involvement here, though it stems a bit deeper than what I've written. I've deliberately left it obtuse as its info very few people would have.
Engagement
Hooks
Florist: As of two turns prior, Squall is an independent florist who specialises in lilies (Bright, Trite and Nymeia), providing boutique blooms for gatherings but also for the yearly Rising event. His specialty is an exceedingly rare Nymeia lily known as 'Hydaelyn's Gift' or 'Echoflower', a which comes in a white-yellow-blue gradient and is known for being difficult to grow. At current he is doing research into another flower, which involves him travelling on the regular.
Former Militia: Squall served in the Lominsan military for just over ten years, though he was only in active combat for seven. The long service has resulted in a young man with a broad knowledge of arms and tactics, and who would be possibly be known to other Barracudas, Yellowjackets or Maelstrom members.
Carteneau Survivor: Like everyone else who lived through that day, Squall has very few memories of the battlefield, and naught but a nasty wound to show for it. But like others, he does remember the lead up, the bloodshed...and the survivor's guilt that came with it.
Adventurer: Squall has been adventuring for some time, and has become fairly good at it. He generally has a choice tidbit or two to impart regarding either his own experiences or an insightful piece of advice regarding that of others. He still picks up jobs if needed, especially if there's potential for new places and sights.
Dark Knight: Although taboo, some who are familiar with the aetherical signature will see it - Squall has been through the trials of a Dark Knight, even if he isn't currently wielding the claymore. Despite his reticence, he would be more than willing to mentor - Twelve knows he needed one when it was his time to face the darkness.
Echobearer: As much as possible Squall keeps this to himself -- the burden of the Echo is not one to be underestimated, and he has no desire to be singled out. Squall's Echo is unique, in that its uniquely cumbersome. Those who are familiar with the Echo or memory aether may find Squall a fascinating study, whilst others may find their problems laid out before Squall in a way he deeply dislikes. Either way, actually extracting an honest answer will not be easy.
Scion: Squall joined the Scions of the Seventh Dawn shortly before the towers began appearing around Eorzea. This is another thing he's not very public about, though there's a chance one may have seen him in Primal combat during the repeated tower summonings or lurking around Mor Dhona.

I'm open to pretty much anything! The only exception is ERP - although I can write it, and Squall as a character is sexually active, I generally choose not to explore that side as I'm more here for story.
Squall's Class Discrepancies
Astrologian
Being self taught has left Squall at a strange impasse. Although there is a severe disadvantage in how his cards are played, the eventual outcome is...unique.Providing party buffs requires a total of three cards, rather than the one to begin with. Cards are divided similarly to traditional astrologian -- however he refers to Lord of Crowns/Melee type cards as 'Reds' and Lady of Crowns/Caster type as 'Blues'. They are considered more or less oppositional, just as one player takes Red and one takes Blue in Triple Triad.
The sigils are instead interpreted as numbers:
Crescent: 1
Moon: 2
Sun: 3
Squall's HUD, for reference, would look as such:
The baseline goal is to get a full set of one colour. He can Play at one, two, or three rows.
However, there is also an extra mechanic -- the Plus and Same rules are in effect, and successfully performing Plus or Same (and additionally Combos) will boost the power of the line.
And so on and so forth. So while the end goal is a full set of one colour, the true goal would be to successfully play the cards in such an order that when the 9th card is played, a Combo is initiated that sweeps the board.
The amount of aether and energy required to successfully get the best result leads to enormous power in a 9-card play, with a Red set doing massive damage, and a Blue set doing a massive group heal.
Proper comboed variants of these would be enormously powerful, but achieving those outcomes is extremely difficult. The Plays available:
A three card Red play is a damage boost to a target party member. (8% damage potency, equivalent of a single target Divination)
Three card Blue is a heal. (equivalent to Essential at max potency, without the HP requirement)
Six card Red (unboosted) deals damage, Comboed deals more (Comboed would be equivalent to Afflatus Misery)
Six card Blue is a large heal, Comboed makes it group but lower potency. (Single target - 80% HP, Group- equivalent of Earthly Star).
9-card Blue is called Spiral Galaxy, and is a massive burst heal that also applies the effect of the current Sect to party members (at 125% potency if Comboed)
9-card Red is called Stellar Collapse, and does massive damage to a single target and others (decreasing in potency with the more enemies present). Comboed will also apply a unique DOT, Gravitational Force, and determines the overall potency.Mixed colour plays will be a weaker version of whatever colour is most prominent, and if equal on a six-card play, the targeted party member will receive a very weak version of both.
A visual guide is below. Regarding Endwalker, Squall would learn those skills, though he's not at that level.
Others
Gunbreaker: Squall moves slower but hits harder than how Gunbreaker is portrayed by the in-game class (resulting no difference in damage outputs.) This is mostly due to him preferring revolver-barreled models over lighter, musket based ones. The weapon he came to Eorzea with, and the last remaining remnant of his life in the Far East, is a revolver model emblazoned with Griever, his clan's deity. Squall has taken exemplary care of the weapon, either having it hidden and buried inside its case when he had no stable home, or tending for it regularly when he finally got stability.Dark Knight: Beside the obvious Living Shadow discrepancy, the instinctual nature of Dark Knight means not much differs. The notable one is Flood of Darkness/Shadow, which is performed with a downward strike rather than a shooting motion (maintaining the animation used for Dark Passenger.)
Melee: The Saber class is Squall's unique DPS, a self-created technique combining Bozjan, Far Eastern and Ul'dahn sword work with aether usage. It's tankier than its Far Eastern counterpart, as Squall is drawing on his tank and healing experience for self-utility.A notable unique skill is Prey Marker-- this marks an enemy as Prey, and increases damage dealt by Squall, but also by anyone partnered with him. (Dance Partner, Left Eye, Synastry, Cover).
Key NPCs
Two people in particular were defining for Squall, both in the person he became due to their guidance, and the person he became due to their loss.
Ellone Loire
A young Auri woman who was adopted by Squall's mother into their clan.
She was very attached to Raine, and then the Hyuran man Raine fell in love with.
So when everything fell apart, and she and Squall were foisted onto a ship toward Eorzea, her child's mind found solace in blaming the only consistent aspect - Squall himself.
Squall, of course, had no idea that she harboured this resentment, referring to her as 'Sis' and aching to find her when she disappeared, leaving Seifer as Squall's only companion. However, when he did eventually find her things did not go well.
She was an adoptee into a lower Ishgard House because of her gift with the Echo-- a unique variant that allows her to tap into and see the world from the view of another experiencing the Echo at the same time.
In that meeting, she told Squall she blamed him for the events that transpired, and saw him as someone who brought death with him due to the few moments she had seen via her Echo.
Realising there was no reasoning with her, Squall left, severing the last of their ties. He has not spoken to her since.
Seifer Almasy
Although many assessed Squall and Seifer as 'rivals' and assume they hated each other, the opposite was true -- they were more akin to brothers, growing up together and pushing each other to do better. A lot of Squall's stubbornness and tenacity is thanks to Seifer; and in turn, every time Squall pulled ahead at all, Seifer would knuckle down himself. They joined the Yellow Jackets together, resolving that the combat training and money was worth having to do the 'policing' involved with their jobs. Assigned different regiments at Cartenau, their last sortie was the last time Squall saw him before their final meeting.
Seeing the damage wrought by a Primal, Seifer came to realise that Garlemald's goals weren't misplaced, and upon contacting a Garlean officer, learned the Meteor Project had not gone as planned. Seifer defected and joined the Garlean army, falling under the wings of both The Black Wolf and Nero tol Scaeva, coming to wield a gunblade and rising through the ranks.
During Operation Archon, Seifer was assigned to Castrum Marinum. Meanwhile, Squall was part of the party leading the Marinum assault.
Inside the Castrum, the two argued their views, eventually coming to blows with Squall as the victor. Injured and enraged, Seifer retreated.
A large explosion from the center of the structure soon followed, intent on culling Garlean numbers.
Squall stayed to see if Seifer left the Castrum, but he did not. Although it was Seifer's choice to join the Garleans and fight Squall, Squall blames himself for how events unfolded and Seifer's presumed death.

Squall's Clan
Background
Keeper of the Moon Miqo'te Clans are matriarchal societies, usually consisting of tight knit groups of no more than two to three families. Although there is disparity between the Keepers of the Far East and the Keepers of Eorzea, they do share similarities.Like the Miqo'te of Eorzea, Squall's clan came to the continent during the Fifth Umbral Era, crossing the great frozen sea to reach Valnain and eventually heading further north. This clan, along with several other nomadic, warring clans, used to the constant fight for resources in the inhospitable Meracydia, were the ones responsible for the repeated Primal summonings that would see the Burn left bereft of aether. The clan migrated again, and for a time were no longer summoning as they once did. However, as the Garleans furthered their invasion of Dalmasca, Bozja, Doma and the surrounding land, a decision was made to summon their deity once again, to drive out the Imperial invaders.Summonings conducted by this clan give one of their male offspring as an offering to the deity, with the male in question being denoted by the clan's Seer-- and Squall was that chosen sacrifice.
For reasons unknown, the summoning failed, and the clan turned on Squall. His mother whisked him and Ellone away, with her to stay behind and try to quell their ire. Her success is unknown, as the clan, and most traces of its existence, are gone by the time the Seventh Astral Era begins.
Naming Conventions
Unlike the Keepers who find their home in Eorzea, the clans of the Far East inherit forenames via elements and variations within. Elements are assigned to family lines, and more than one family will inevitably have the same element.
Squall's family element was water, leaning primarily into storms. His surname, originally Lyenoha, was misinterpreted by both himself and Ellone upon arriving in Eorzea, and has been 'Leonhart' on all of his Eorzean documentation. Squall's lack of connection to his tribe means he is unlikely to ever correct it. The officer who granted him his papers did of course make sure to ask what Squall's mother's name was, and as a result he is officially known as Raine'a -- this is not a name he has used for anything but an alias, though it has come up numerous times during his military deployment. Those he does not know well and does not expect to know well will occasionally get an introduction of 'Ren'.
Deities
The roaming clans of the area had sets of deities very similar to the Eorzean's Twelve. For Squall's clan group, they revered the twin moons -- the greater moon, a fair maiden not unlike Menphina (and will be referred as such for ease), and the lesser moon her guardian.
Menphina was the giver of life and bounty -- representing both a maiden and a mother, Menphina drew destined lovers together, soothed the pain of heartbreak, and guided mothers through childbirth.
Her guardian (and in some tales, her consort), the lesser moon, is known as Griever -- a silvery-white winged lion. Wheras Menphina represents life and love, Griever is what comes after. Taking the souls of the dead to the heavens, and soothing those still on the earth with his wings from the pain of grief. Griever is also the spirit of bloodshed, called upon when the clan was to fight for strength.
And in that sense, it is Griever who is summoned forth when the clan is to go to war.
Like most Primal entities, summoned Griever is distorted -- made more grotesque, with elongated limbs, a crown, and bladed tail.
The clans families are entirely consisted of those with leonine tails-- they see this as a sign and a blessing of the guardian, that they have the strength needed to overcome battles and the grief that follows.
Artworks are from Final Fantasy VIII.
The Burning Question
For those who are familiar with this character's origins, a question has likely arisen while browsing this site, pertaining to the Eden-based raids.
Initially when I was working on Squall's integration, I considered foregoing connecting him to Eden. But as the raid has continued, and certain elements have arisen, more and more headcanons spawned, blooming like a flower in my mind...
By the time I had finished Eden's Verse, I had even rewritten a portion of Squall's origins. So, the answer to your burning question -- yes, Squall is involved with the Eden raid storyline. When Gaia appeared on the entity, and voidsent spawned within, Squall himself was found, unconscious. Although not apparent at first, a connection began to manifest when they saw how similar Squall and Gaia happen to be.Squall assisted through the battles with Eden, deeply confused by his summoning, and also dealing with a confusing feeling of protectiveness toward Gaia, the two easily falling into a pattern of mentor and student reflective of Thancred and Ryne's relationship. As he was summoned whole, Squall returned for the final summonings, and upon Mitron's appearance, he uttered a curse -- Not you again.Apparently, he and the Ascian have history-- though certainly not in this lifetime. Knowing all too well the feeling of memories being ripped away, Squall fought with his whole being to save Gaia and grant her the opportunity to live for herself. Although harrowing, they all lived, and she and Ryne were granted a chance to live their lives -- and the First a chance to recover from the scars of Light. From within his soul, came a voice. One once riddled with malice, now with an earnest lilt.To see flowers bloom in this place again...I never would've thought it possible. Perhaps it isn't the end. Perhaps one day flowers will bloom in my home again, too.
1555 - Squall Lyenoha is born to Raine Lyenoha on the South-East border of Bozja and Dalmasca
1559 - Squall and Ellone are placed on a ship bound for Eorzea in order to spare them from Garlemald's march into the territory, among other incidents. Raine is presumed dead.
1560 - Squall and Ellone arrive on La Noscea after their ship is destroyed. The Yellowjacket officers who handled their paperwork give him the name Raine'a and misspell 'Lyenoha' as 'Leonhart', and the surname sticks.
1561 - Squall and Ellone are taken into an orphanage on one of Vylbrand's capes.
1562 - Ellone leaves.
1563 - The orphanage shuts down, leaving Squall and Seifer, the remaining orphans, to fend for themselves in Limsa Lominsa.
1567 - Squall and Seifer join the Knights of the Barracuda.
1572 - The Seventh Umbral Calamity decimates Eorzea. Seifer is presumed dead and Squall is injured on the Cartenau Flats.
1573 - Squall, now mostly recovered, begins assisting the restoration effort in La Noscea as a Yellowjacket, while keeping an ear out for the whereabouts of Seifer or Ellone.
1577 - Squall takes a leave of absence from the Yellowjackets, leaving Vylbrand for Ul'dah intent on finding Seifer. His efforts are in vain, and he is eventually requested by the Maelstrom to return and join Operation Archon. Following the declaration of the Seventh Astral Era, Squall formally resigns from the Maelstrom and the Lominsan military as a whole.
1578 - Squall finds a Dark Knight soulstone while en-route to Ishgard. The resulting battle of wills almost kills him, and for most of the year he is out of communication with others.
1579 - Squall, armed with further knowledge of his clan's origins, heads to the Far East to search for answers. He turns up very little and returns to Eorzea empty-handed.
1580, first half - Squall meets Radovan in Mor Dhona, learning both gunbreaker and some of the truth of his origins. Acting as a free agent he joins the Bozjan Resistance efforts, though he goes missing sporadically. As the Scions awake from their comas, Squall's name is formally added to their roster.
1580, second half - Towers spring up around the world. Squall, being an Echo-bearer and a Scion, joins the frontlines in the effort to stop the Lunar Primals.
